Ranch History

Paradise Guest Ranch History

In the late 1890s, Mr. Norman Meldrum drove a herd of cattle from Colorado up to Buffalo, Wyoming, where he had acquired some land. The cattle were wintered near the present Soldier's Home and summered in the upper meadow range of the Big Horns, which was to become Paradise Ranch. Meldrum liked the mountain meadow so well that he proved up on the land and acquired title. He built the original log cabin, which still stands today.

Norman Meldrum’s son, Dr. Gordon Meldrum, returned from the war in the Philippines and decided to settle in Buffalo and establish a practice. Gordon Meldrum was enchanted with the cabin in the mountains and encouraged friends to visit him there. It was these visitors who eventually called the meadow "paradise." The name stuck and eventually became the name of the ranch. Shortly after Dr. Meldrum married Mabel Lee in 1903, they added a few more cabins to accommodate their friends. Soon, they began hosting paying guests and the infant dude ranch was on its way.

Paradise Ranch has hosted many folks from around the globe, including Owen Wister, who wrote a portion of "The Virginian" while a guest; and Aldo Leopold, a writer and guest, wrote this about Paradise Ranch in A Sand County Almanac: "Finally, there was Paradise Ranch, an obvious platitude when read from a map, but something quite different when you arrived there at the end of a hard ride. It lay tucked away on the far side of a high peak,as any proper Paradise should. Through it's verdant meadows meandered a singing trout stream. A horse left for a month on this meadow, waxed so fat that rain-water gathered in a pool on his back. After my first visit to Paradise Ranch I remarked to myself, what else could you call it."

The official date for the beginning is about 1907.

Pack Trips

If you are looking for real western wilderness adventure, this is it! You'll start out with a hearty Paradise Ranch breakfast in our dining room. Then it's off to the ranch packer's shed for departure. The ride into camp is one of the most magnificent trips you will ever take, with the Cloud Peak Wilderness as your backdrop. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch with a view of 13,000 foot Cloud Peak, Bomber Mountain and Black Tooth, then it's on to camp at Frying Pan Lake.

Our Frying Pan Lake Camp is located 12 miles, or 4 1/2 hours by horse, from Paradise Ranch. The lake is one of six in the South Piney Creek drainage. These lakes support healthy populations of brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout. The fishing is excellent, but the riding, scenery and hospitality are second to none.

Located just steps from our camp is an enormous trout rearing pond fed by the spectacular Piney Creek flowing in and out of the lake. If you want to learn how to cast and catch fish in a marvelous high lake environment, this is it! The dedicated fly fisherman can easily catch over 50 Eastern Brook and Cutthroat trout in a day. This is the spot for novices and kids to really enjoy fly fishing and polish their skills.

Several lakes are all within an easy 1 hour walk of the Frying Pan Lake Camp. Each of these lakes offers varied fishing opportunities, with fish caught regularly over 16 inches and 3 pounds. For the dedicated and fit, a challenging 2 1/2 hour hike brings you to South Piney Lake. Enchanting waterfalls and soaring cliffs surround this high alpine beauty.

At South Piney Lake you have the opportunity to catch beautiful Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, some up to 22 inches and 5 pounds. This lake may only see 20 fisherman a year, offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to catch trophy trout in a breathtaking setting.

Our camp features 14 by 20 foot cooking and dining tents with wooden floors and picnic tables. Sleeping tents, quality sleeping bags and cots with foam mattresses are all supplied by the ranch. Two packers will accompany you to camp. They tend to the stock, cook and take care of all camp chores leaving you free to enjoy yourself. Our guests, however, are welcome to participate in camp chores as much or as little as they wish.

Our average trip lasts 4 days and 3 nights. Longer trips can be arranged. The fishing is spectacular, and the 13,000 foot peaks on either side of the lakes provide visitors with spectacular photo opportunities, hiking and horseback options.

Good food is high on our list of pack trip priorities. In addition to the trout you catch, there will be "all you can eat" groceries for those with hearty appetites.

Our Frying Pan pack trip was recently featured on ESPN Outdoors and has become quite popular. We are limited on group size and availability so call early to reserve your spot.

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

Enjoy generous hospitality in Paradise!

We just returned from a one week stay at Paradise with my husband, two kids (11 and 9) and their grandparents. We enjoyed delicious and healthy meals, all levels of horseback riding, fly fishing and hiking. The scenery is jaw-dropping. The ranch has a schedule of many activities you can choose to do each day (horseback riding, fishing, hiking,) although you could just decide to get a massage and relax with a good book by the pool. The ranch has a great kids program as well with activities such as feeding the cows, arts and crafts, archery, swimming and even a chicken chase:). Our cabins were very comfortable and on chilly nights were loved our wood burning fireplace. Owners Clay and Leah have done a wonderful job selecting their staff, as the entire crew are the nicest people you'll ever meet. There were many spirtual moments riding on horseback through God's county - truly awe inspriing natural beauty.
