Families reconnecting under a golden, Wyoming sunset. New friends sitting around the campfire together sharing adventures of the day. Children reveling in the joy of riding a horse for the first time. Natural beauty and clean mountain air surrounding a group of guests that are now family. This is what we envision for you. We are a family owned and operated all-inclusive dude ranch that sits in the heart of the Shoshone National Forest just eight miles from the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Derived from our personal experience as dude ranch guests, we hold a steadfast commitment to providing you with the vacation of a lifetime.

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 6 and over

We understand that memories last a lifetime and we want to instill some good ones early on for your children! That is why we have a dedicated kids program to keep them engaged and active so that they can get the most out of their time here. If a young one is nervous about being on a horse for the first time, that’s not a problem. One of our wranglers will happily start them in the arena or on a pony ride around the ranch to establish a sense of balance and comfort. If any little cow-pokes want to hone their aim, they can do so at the shooting range where BB-guns, archery, and staff instruction await them. Roping lessons are available on the different lawns so your kids can become true cowboys & cowgirls. Board games, the pool table, and Foosball are always available inside the saloon. To top if off, a group scavenger hunt for all the ranch kids is scheduled each Friday night with a special prize waiting at the end.

Ranch History

The story of Crossed Sabres Ranch begins back in 1898 when it was incorporated by Aaron “Tex” Holm as Lodge 3 of the Holm Transportation Company. Holm’s transportation business was to move people by steam-powered car from Cody, WY to the lodge, and then by carriage from the lodge to the newly formed Yellowstone National Park where his other two lodges stood.

Disaster struck soon after when the main building of the lodge burned down in 1914 and the business was bought out by one of its former share-holders, J.W. “Billy” Howell. Howell changed the name to Holm Lodge Crossed Sabres Ranch, and, not long after, simply Crossed Sabres Ranch. It became one of the original dude ranches that operated in the state of Wyoming. So began the Crossed Sabres Legacy.

We, Kenny and Laura Long, picked up the Crossed Sabres brand in 2013. Kenny comes from a lifetime association of training and showing horses, and as a family we come from a steeped background of dude ranching with our children. It is the invaluable time spent with family that we experienced that provides us with a steadfast commitment to provide the same experience to you and yours. The original stagecoach barn of Tex Holm’s operation still stands on the property today, and we see it as a testament to the experience that can still be found here: a chance to disconnect from the hustle of daily life and embrace the beauty that exists here — the joy of simple western living! From small numbers of guests each week to family-style dinners, we seek to give you something special: the vacation of a lifetime.

While at the ranch, you certainly won’t be going hungry. Our hearty western ranch cuisine is sure to keep you going as you experience everything the ranch has to offer. Wake up to a ranch breakfast of overnight french-toast, pinwheels omelettes, or homemade cinnamon roles that are to die for. For those wishing for something on the lighter side: cereal, fresh fruit, and pastries are always available. For lunch, try a monster buffalo burger with a fresh salad or stuff together the best taco you can with all of our fixings from our taco bar.

Dinner is the social meal. Recap the day’s events in a casual environment as you enjoy entrees like melt-in-your-mouth ribs, Chef Mary’s famous pot roast, or a full-spread Thanksgiving meal on Thursday nights. When you’re not enjoying meals in the lodge, you’ll be enjoying meals like babyback ribs with cornbread at our weekly BBQ. While sitting outside around the camp fire, you can take in the beautiful weather and huge mountain views. Find yourself hungry in-between meals? Dig into our bottomless cookie jar filled with an assortment of cookies made fresh daily.

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

Fulfilled and exceeded every expectation I could have imagined!

A ranch experience was something I dreamed of since childhood. My expectations for Crossed Sabres Ranch were perhaps a bit idealistic given all of my fantasies. I can only say that this vacation experience fulfilled and exceeded every expectation I could have imagined. The setting was tranquil and beautiful. I loved my cabin along the babbling brook that lulled me to sleep every night. The wranglers (staff) were friendly and experienced in their areas of expertise. It was clear they wanted you to be successful and have a good time, no matter your chosen activities for the day. I will be returning with my whole family! This is an ideal family experience. And by the way the food is excellent, plentiful and oh that “endless cookie jar
