Located in a beautiful mountain valley three miles from the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, Shoshone Lodge and Guest Ranch has been serving guests for almost 100 years!

With abundant wildlife, breathtaking vistas, and access to hundreds of miles of horseback riding and hiking trails in the Shoshone National Forest, Shoshone Lodge and Guest Ranch is the ideal place to reconnect with those closest to you, enjoy new friendships and experience a truly relaxing western vacation.

Children at the Ranch

Over the years, Shoshone Lodge has been an important place for families to reconnect and make great memories. Our daily activities are designed to be experienced by families as a group. Kids 6 and up can join their parents on trail rides; kids under 6, with the supervision of a parent, can enjoy pony rides. We also offer programming for kids who would like to learn more about horses, including feeding, grooming, and saddling as well as fun children's activities.

Ranch History

Shoshone Lodge and Guest Ranch has been in the same family since the 1920s, when the main lodge was built from local timber by Cody's first county sheriff, Henry Dahlem.

The lodge has been run by members of the family for the past four generations, and is now owned and operated by Henry’s great-grandson, Mike Christiansen.

When you stay at the ranch, you will be personally entertained by Mike and his family, and will be able to hear first-hand about the incredible history of Shoshone Lodge; including riding past historical sites like the location of the family’s sawmill, which was used to mill the logs for the lodge and original cabins.

Riding considerations

Why our riding stands out

  • All of our riding takes place in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem since we're just a few miles outside of Yellowstone, and it is really remarkable country to get to see from the back of a horse. Our horses are gentle and sure-footed, enjoyed by beginners and experienced riders alike.
  • Riding our trails in the Shoshone National Forest is a bucket-list experience for many riders. Early in the season, bear sightings during rides are common, and guests enjoy seeing the last of the snow on the mountains. Mid-summer brings warmer temperatures and an explosion of colors as the paintbrush, mule's ears, and summer berries come into season. Early fall ends our season with cooler temperatures, the beautiful yellows of the aspen trees, and more wildlife sightings.
  • The trail systems that we ride are expansive and diverse, offering options that range from meadows and quiet rides through the forest to river crossings, climbs to higher elevations, and photo opportunities at breathtaking overlooks. This is big, wild country, and there's no better way to see it than from the back of a good horse!
